Before I answer this question and give you some tips, here is something I want you to think about. Between all the space agencies around the world and from all the nations that have a space program, there are more astronauts on Planet Earth , than there are photographers that earn a living from Formula 1 photography. It is an extremely niche job in a very niche industry. You need to be realistic on your chances of earning a living from photography at F1 Grand Prix. By all means, dream big and shoot for the stars, but make sure you are prepared to put in the work. This profession is not everything you might think it is.
In 2023, I taught a 3h workshop as part of my Paddock Focus series where we went into a deep dive on how to make more impactful images from F1 races as a fan with a camera, but also, how to become an F1 photographer and how to get credentials to F1 races. If you're interested in taking that workshop, here is the LINK.
But if you want the short cut and just want to see the steps... here are some essentials to even begin heading in the direction of becoming an F1 photographer.
1. Build Photography Skills
Master the Basics: Learn photography fundamentals, such as composition, lighting, shutter speed, and aperture.
Specialize in Motorsports: Practice capturing high-speed action shots at local races or motorsport events.
Learn Editing Software: Master tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to polish your images, but editing is not the imoportant part of becoming a motorsport photographer. Mastery of the camera and ability to make strong images in ANY condition is the most important skill.

2. Gain Experience in Motorsports Photography
Start Small: Attend local car meets, races, or motorsport events to build your portfolio.
Develop Panning Techniques: Perfect the art of panning to capture sharp cars against blurred backgrounds, emphasizing speed.
Capture Varied Shots: Include pit lane action, crowd reactions, and close-up shots of cars.

3. Build a Strong Portfolio
Showcase Your Work: Create a professional website or Instagram page featuring your best motorsport photography.
Focus on Storytelling: Your images should capture the essence of the event, from the cars to the atmosphere.
Highlight F1-Style Content: Include images that align with the aesthetic and energy of Formula 1.
4. Network in the Industry
Connect with Motorsport Enthusiasts: Attend events, join online communities, and engage with fellow photographers.
Collaborate with Teams: Offer your services to local racing teams, magazines, or bloggers.
Work with Media Outlets: Approach motorsport publications or websites to get your work published.
5. Gain Credentials and Access
Apply for Media Passes: Secure media credentials for smaller racing events to build experience.
Understand F1 Regulations: Learn about the requirements for obtaining an FIA-accredited media pass, as access to F1 events is highly restricted.
6. Learn the Business Side
Understand Licensing: Know how to license your images for commercial use.
Network with Sponsors: Collaborate with brands that sponsor F1 teams to increase visibility.
Price Your Work: Set competitive rates for your services.
Want to hear more about the Business of Motorsport Photography? Check out our Paddock Focus episode on the topic.
7. Target F1 Opportunities
Apply to F1 Teams or Sponsors: Look for photography roles directly with teams or sponsors.
Build Relationships with the FIA: Attend FIA-affiliated events and network with officials to get noticed.
8. Stay Updated and Keep Improving
Follow F1 Trends: Keep up with F1's visual style and branding.
Invest in Gear: Use professional equipment like telephoto lenses and full frame cameras. But you DO NOT NEED the latest and greatest equipment to make beautiful motorsport images. I did a whole blog post on this topic based around What Camera to Buy for Motorsport Photography.
Seek Feedback: Continuously refine your skills based on critiques from professionals.
9. Persevere and Stay Passionate
Breaking into F1 photography is competitive. I get THOUSANDS of DMs every year asking the same question. What makes you different or better than all of those people? Stay patient, keep improving, and maintain a love for the sport AND for photography. Dedication and persistence will help you achieve your goal. But remember. There are no quick ways to the top of any profession.
